Karl named Washington Blade’s “Best Gay Television Personality”

  • Share
  • It’s official. Last night it was announced that I was voted “Best Gay Television Personality” in the 10th annual Washington BladeBest of Gay D.C.” contest. Here’s the write-up:

    Best Gay Television Personality

Television is the defining medium for the way people consume their news and make decisions,” progressive strategist Karl Frisch says about being able to share his vision with millions through his television appearances. “[Television] gives me the opportunity to show what a serious gay man has to say about politics.”

Frisch says since he left Media Matters last year to form Bullfight Strategies with former Media Matters president Eric Burns, he’s been tapped by shows like “Countdown with Keith Olbermann,” “The Big Picture with Thom Hartman” on RT America and several CNN and MSNBC shows to not only discuss LGBT issues, but all progressive values.

“People embrace the fact it’s important to have LGBT people appearing in news programs,” says Frisch, a Los Angeles native and now D.C.-based syndicated columnist and radio/TV guest. “I hope people see the need for having more LGBT voices in the news.

    Inside the Beltway

    By Jennifer Harper

    Quake-a-Mageddon

Yes, why not use the Great Capital Earthquake of 2011, the proverbial Quake-a-mageddon to exercise vigorous political humor? Bars in the nation’s capital were offering discounts on “shaken” drinks. And after the White House rattled from the Earth’s shifting tectonic plates rather than the undulating sound bites of Congress, folks took to social media. Among the aftershocks and after-tweets that surfaced, almost instantly, on Twitter:

“Shaking buildings full of people yelling and screaming, Tweeting up a storm and freaking out. Just your run-of-the-mill Rick Perry rally.” (From RickPerryFacts.)

“Capitol evacuated. Nation experiences brief economic recovery.” (commentator Ann Coulter)

“Okay, I’m done talking about the Earthquake. So far as I know, it didn’t hurt anyone. The Republicans on the other hand…” (Karl Frisch, former spokesman, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee).

“Has Michael Bloomberg called in grief counselors yet?” (Columnist Michelle Malkin)

    Queery: Karl Frisch

    By Joey DiGuglielmo

Karl Frisch started his career as a Republican. He now makes a living pointing out what he calls the party’s hypocrisies and biases masquerading as journalism.

“It’s been an advantage in some ways,” the 33-year-old Westchester, Calif., native says. “I came to this fight having seen what the other side is capable of. I started very young … working on the campaign of a local Republican. My parents were Republicans … my politics were not motivated by ideology but more by my own trajectory and career. I was thinking about what would raise my profile and make me more successful.”

    Ahh…the memories

“It’s worth noting that in @DexterVonFrisch’s first year of life he was named the cutest dog in DC by @FishbowlDC. #happybdaydexter” — Syndicated Columnist and Bullfight Strategies Partner Karl Frisch in a Monday tweet. This photograph was taken when we met up with Dexter at Starbucks in Dupont Circle. We presume he was reading FishbowlDC. Happy Birthday Dexter!

Creative Loafing: No apologies – A visit from right-wing flame-thrower Andrew Breitbart

  • Share
  • From today’s Creative Loafing in Tampa:

Karl Frisch, a Breitbart critic with the liberal media watchdog group Media Matters, says the only difference between the ACORN incident and the Sherrod affair was that “he was proven a fraud in a few hours vs. several months,” referring to the fact that initial reports about the ACORN story (such as the fact that the undercover “reporters” were dressed as a pimp and a prostitute) were later found to be untrue. After a four-month investigation, a Brooklyn D.A.’s investigation found no illegal activity by the organization.

“He’s like everyone in conservative journalism,” Frisch says. “Which is to come up with a story and go get one side of the evidence to prove that story.”

    […]

But does he have a future after the Sherrod embarrassment? When asked if he considers Andrew Breitbart dangerous, Karl Frisch says simply, “He’s as dangerous as the media allows him to be.”

Bill Press: Toxic Talk was “was born” in Karl’s office

  • Share
  • The June 15 edition of CSPAN’s BookTV featured a party hosted by Media Matters for Bill Press’ latest book, Toxic Talk: How the Radical Right Has Poisoned America’s Airwaves.

During his remarks to those assembled, Press said:

And then I’ve got to say a word about Media Matters. Right? And that’s where we are.  This book would not exist without Media Matters. Truly, It was born — or conceived I guess is the word — in the office of Karl Frisch… where Kevin and I came in a year or so ago and sat down with Karl and said, “you know what? We’re thinking about writing a book about right-wing talk radio, what do you think we ought to do?”

Gay City News: Editing For the Enemy

  • Share
  • From today’s Gay City News:

Karl Frisch, a contributor at Media Matters for America, a left-leaning media watchdog group, agreed.

“It seems that some people, whether it’s LGBT employees at Fox News or other News Corp. outlets or people at other publishing outlets, value their paychecks more than they value being treated with simple human dignity,” Frisch said.

    [...]

For Frisch, this apparent agnosticism about the content of these right-wing books ignores the harm caused by them and the fact that those messages are carried to a wide audience.

“The Glenn Becks of the world, the Ann Coulters of the world make it okay for people to openly ridicule gay people,” Frisch said. “They bring it in front of people who are not pursuing that type of information.”

National Post: Smart as a Fox – Critics call Glenn Beck a demagogue, but fans consider him a hero

  • Share
  • From today’s National Post (Canada):

Some critics claim he is a classic demagogue, providing simplistic solutions to complicated problems, creating mysterious enemies and weaving conspiracy theories.

“Fear sells,” said Karl Frisch, a senior fellow at Media Matters for America, a liberal think-tank.

“If you can convince a good enough number of people that the problems they are facing in a tough economy with a progressive Democratic president are the result of some ominous threat to their liberty and freedom, and present that day in and day out, you’re liable to get a dedicated audience who will not question what you say.”

    [...]

But Mr. Frisch of Media Matters for America said people should not to be fooled by Mr. Beck’s impressive numbers.

“It’s like NASCAR — a good number turn in for the race but a lot of people are tuning in for the crash,” Mr. Frisch said.

“No doubt a majority of his listeners buy into his demented world view. There are also a number of people who tune in for the theatrics, who find him absolutely hysterical even when he’s not intending to be.”

Politico: Left gears up to fight media wars

  • Share
  • From today’s Politico:

Media Matters obtained the student’s driver’s license and proved he was 16 at the time, the age of consent in Massachusetts. While some may still question Jennings’ judgment, he didn’t break any law.

“This should put to rest claims made by Fox News and other conservatives that Jennings covered up ‘statutory rape’ or ‘molestation,’” wrote Media Matters senior fellow Karl Frisch. “To continue reporting such reckless speculation is at best willful disregard for the facts and at worst journalistic malpractice.”

The battle over Jennings convinced Media Matters that it needed to not only monitor other media but to do its own original reporting. On Monday, Joe Strupp, who covered the press for 11 years with Editor & Publisher magazine, will launch a new media blog after signing on as the group’s first investigative reporter.

Washington Times: Pro-life ad set for Super Bowl

  • Share
  • From today’s Washington Times:

As a result of these decisions, liberal media analysts, a Facebook group and at least one coalition of national feminist groups have called on CBS to withdraw the ad or stand accused of a double standard.

It isn’t surprising the CBS’ hypocrisy has sparked an effort throughout the progressive blogosphere and on Facebook demanding that the network either reject the Focus on the Family ad or agree to also air the UCC’s, wrote Karl Frisch of Media Matters for America on Monday.
